Connection hardware

Network infrastructure:

What is a Router? use in a WAN, a device connect two LAN or subnet together.
Below are Cisco router, they dominate the router market.

The back side of a Cisco Router. It has 8 port or 8 Network Card. and 3 others ports.

What is a Switch? use in a LAN, a device that connect all the PCs together.
Small LAN use un-manage type of switch. While a large LAN use manage switch and capable of network control and grouping of PC into VLAN by department for QoS.
Below is a Cisco 48 port switch.

What is a Hub? for small office and home office device. Hub is also known as a repeater.
It is not manageable, it is basically a strip down of switch device. Hub is outdated.
Today you will likely find an 8 port switch instead of hub at the local store.

What is?
-WAN
(if you have more then one LAN or more then one branch office)
LAN a single network for a one corporation.

Subnet , when you have a LAN and a branch office at another town (subnet – sub LAN). You’ll also deploy router to link them together.

-Firewall, after you deploy your router and switch. You’ll also need a firewall device. That block or allow connection into your network. Firewall can be both software only or a dedicated hardware like the SonicWall.
